Show me a person’s morning routine, and I can tell you who they are.

How a person spends their morning is very telling of who that person is.

It is also one of the best indicators of future success.

Hal Elrod made the concept of “The Miracle Morning” famous with his best selling book of the same title. Since his book became a worldwide phenomenon, millions of people have become aware of just how important the mornings are to someone’s success, happiness, and overall wellbeing.

The Miracle Morning, or simply a personal development focused morning routine is the idea that the first thing you do when you wake up is work on yourself. Whether that is for the first 20 minutes or the first 2 hours, the idea of the morning routine is to focus on you and nothing else for this allotted time. No emails, no phone calls, just you and your growth.

Billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Richard Branson takes his morning routine very seriously,

“Over my 50 years in business, I have learned that if I rise early I can achieve so much more in a day, and therefore in life…

No matter where I am in the world, I try to routinely wake up at around 5am. By rising early, I’m able to do some exercise and spend time with my family, which puts me in a great mind frame before getting down to business. . .

Being an early riser isn’t about trumpeting how hard you work. It’s about doing everything within your power to help your business achieve success; and if that means you have to get up an hour not known to most, then you might as well enjoy the sunrise.”

But why do you have to have a good morning routine? Why can’t you just do this routine in the middle of the day or at night? After all, we’re tired and we have work to get to in the morning.

Here’s a few reasons why owning the morning helps you own the day.

 

1. It creates the discipline of working on yourself. Once you start respecting your time and working on you, you start respecting your time in all aspects of life. Working on yourself and your own growth is a habit. Just like any other habit, it is hard to create. But once you do, you will grow in other aspects and bring this habit over to all areas of your life.

 

2.  Working on yourself first thing in the morning ensures that it actually gets done. We have all sputtered the famous lie, “I will work out tonight.” As good as our intentions are, life happens. They day zaps our energy and by the time night comes, we have no energy to workout, or to read that book, or to even meditate. Using the morning for this routine guarantees there are no distractions or opportunities for your plan to get derailed.

 

3.  It sets the tone. The law of inertia states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion. The same is true for our emotions and mindsets. Have you ever got out of bed and stubbed your toe? You are instantly angry and that negativity carries over into the rest of your day. Or you fight with your spouse in the morning? It takes hours to shake off that negative state. Waking up to a powerful morning routine ensures that you start the day off right. You get into your peak mindset and can tackle any challenge with positivity. Starting your day off with wins, positivity, and personal development sets the tone for an amazing day, which sets the stage for an amazing life.

But what does a morning routine look like and how can you get started tomorrow?

A personal development focused morning routine, or a Miracle Morning, can be structured in any way that feels right for you. I personally have tried many many variations over the years, including waking up at different times, different exercises, and the same exercises in different order. The key here is to find something that flows right for you and gives you energy.

Here is my current routine:

  • Wake up/ brush teeth (10 minutes)
  • Make my superfood shake (5 minutes)
  • Journal (3 things I am grateful for and the rest of the page free write) (5–10 minutes)
  • Review my values, purpose and goals that I have on a Google Sheet (3 minutes)
  • Visualize (5 minutes)
  • Meditate (15 minutes)
  • Read (15 minutes)
  • Head to the gym to workout

In under an hour I do more personal development work than I used to do in a month.

This has also turned into my favorite and most sacred part of the day. I wake up looking forward to my morning routine.

When starting your own morning routine, start small. Wake up 20 minutes earlier than usual and focus on doing one or two exercises. Then build from there.

The morning routine is one of the few keystone habits that can literally change your life overnight. It is also one of the few exercises that literally anyone and everyone can implement.

You can choose to wake up 20, 30, 40 minutes earlier.

You can choose to not hit snooze.

You can choose to take responsibility for your life.

And you can choose to live your best life. And it starts in the morning.
